Lee Min Ho + Kim Go Eun Enjoy Romantic Fried-Chicken Date In “The King: Eternal Monarch”
SBS’s new drama “The King: Eternal Monarch” has shared a sneak peek of Lee Min Ho and Kim Go Eun on a fun date!
Spoiler
On the previous episode of “The King: Eternal Monarch,” Emperor Lee Gon (played by Lee Min Ho) struggled to convince Jung Tae Eul (played by Kim Go Eun) that he was truly an emperor from a parallel universe. Despite his failure to convince her of his true identity, Lee Gon boldly declared at the end of the episode that he intended to make her his empress. In newly released stills from the drama’s upcoming episode, Lee Gon and Jung Tae Eul get to know each other better over a delicious meal of fried chicken. While Jung Tae Eul looks pleased to be introducing Lee Gon to so-maek (a Korean cocktail of soju mixed with beer), Lee Gon mainly seems pleased to be spending time with Jung Tae Eul, and he is unable to take his eyes off her throughout their date.
Although surprised and amused by Jung Tae Eul’s masterful so-maek mixing abilities, Lee Gon is wary of actually trying the drink, which he has never seen before.
According to those present during filming, Lee Min Ho—who is known for not being much of a drinker in real life—couldn’t help bursting into laughter after seeing how serious Kim Go Eun looked while mixing the so-maek.
The producers of “The King: Eternal Monarch” commented, “Lee Min Ho and Kim Go Eun are romance masters who know exactly how to make viewers’ hearts flutter. Please tune in this week to find out how Lee Gon and Jung Tae Eul’s relationship changes after Lee Gon’s sudden proposal.”
The next episode of “The King: Eternal Monarch” will air on April 24 at 10 p.m. KST.

“The King: Eternal Monarch” Producers Apologize After Controversy Over Building Designs Resembling Japanese Architecture
The production team behind “The King: Eternal Monarch” has apologized and will be making changes to the drama following criticism over the show including architecture seemingly influenced by Japanese temples.
The much-anticipated SBS fantasy romance drama premiered on April 17 with record-breaking ratings for its timeslot on the network and has now aired two episodes. Its story features two parallel universes: one with a democracy that is similar to modern-day Korea and one that is an alternative universe in which Korea is an empire ruled by a monarch. Emperor Lee Gon (Lee Min Ho) and detective Jung Tae Eul (Kim Go Eun) work together to protect the ones they love and close the portal between the two worlds.
A controversy erupted online following its initial episodes as people noted that the fictional world of the Korean Empire depicted in the title video for the show appeared to use images of buildings that are similar to Japanese temples. One of these is a building in the Japanese temple complex Tōdai-ji, which many people speculated was an influence for the design of the drama’s royal palace. Another building that was suspected to have inspired a building in the title video is a five-story pagoda in Japan’s temple of Kōfuku-ji. Some viewers also saw similarities between the Imperial Seal for the fictional Korean Empire and the real Imperial Seal of Japan.

Netflix presents The King: Eternal Monarch written by Kim Eun-suk (who also authored the 2016 fantasy romance Goblin) starring Kim Go-eun, Lee Min-ho, Jung Eun-chae, Woo Do-hwan, Kim Kyung-nam and more.

It was just an ordinary day on duty when inspector Jung Tae-eul and Lee Gon, the king of Kingdom of Corea, found each other in front of Gwanghwamun – from that moment on, their past and future intertwined. Together with their close ones, they are whisked into unexpected turns in life, and a future full of decisions awaits.
“To me, it is more of a heart-warming fairytale. Every character is unique in their own way, and with that, brings out the captivating chemistry between them,” said Lee Min-ho during the press conference of The King: Eternal Monarch.
